An indigenous Marma girl sexually harassed by Bengali youths in Bandarban

On 1 February 2013 an indigenous Marma girl was sexual harassment by three Bengali youths at Balaghata bazaar area of Bandarban municipal area under Bandarban district.
It is reported that Md. Imran, his friend Hamid and another youth sexually harassed, an eleventh grade female student residing at residential hostel of Bandarban Women’s College, when she went to Balaghata bazaar for shopping. She was also harassed and threatened by the youths while she was in the bazaar earlier in the morning. The victim reported the incident to the hostel authority and later the authority informed the police about the matter.

The college’s assistant Mr. Naishemong Marma and a local shop keeper Mr. Liakot said that they were present there when the incident occurred. They tried to prevent the miscreants, but they did not bother them and instead snatched away the mobile phone set of Naishemong Marma.

The hostel’s superintendent, Ms. Farzana Akter said that initially the victim had not informed them about the incident and that when the matter became public they informed the police about it. She confirmed that the girl was sexually harassed by the Bengali youths.

Local people informed that the perpetrator Imran is a member of the Bengali Jubo Parishad (Bengali Youth Council). He and his friends went absconding from the area subsequent to the incident. However, the perpetrators were threatening the victim.

An Indigenous Tripura college student sexually harassed by Bengali youth

On 2 February 2013 an indigenous girl student were sexually harassed by a Bengali youth named Md. Salman s/o Mohammad Harun at Milanchari resort area of Bandarban Municipal area in Bandarban district. The incident occurred during the demonstration and public gathering in support of the half-day strike of following day called by several indigenous and women’s organizations protesting increasing violence against women across the country and demanding arrest and punishment of rapists of 14-year old indigenous girl Thumaching Marma at Kaukhali upazila under Rangamati district.

The victim’s family members said that the victim was returning home at Saingya Tripura Para under Bandarban municipality after finishing the classes at her college. At around 4.00 pm when she reached at Milanchari resort area of the Bandarban-Thanchi road, Md. Salman, a worker of private resort, suddenly grabbed her. The victim was finally able to free herself and fled away.

The matter was brought to the local public representatives. Commissioner of Bandarban municipality Mr. Habibur Rahman and member of union council Mr. Jagadish Tripura said that they were preparing for a arbitration on this matter. The perpetrator Md. Saman went absconding after this incident.

An autistic girl raped in Sajek

On February 24, 2013 an autistic Jumma girl has been reportedly raped by a Bengali settler in Sajek in Rangamati district.

Locals said the incident happened at 3pm today at Nakshachari under Sajek Union while the victim, a 16-year-old girl, went out for a walk.

Finding her alone, Md. Mamun, 20, son of Jalil, of Baghaihat bazaar, took her into a roadside jungle and committed rape on her.

The villagers recovered the girl from the jungle, but failed to nab Mamun as he escaped riding his motorbike.

The incident was reported to the Baghaichari Thana, but the police are yet to arrest him.

On March 6 2013, Bangladesh army have prevented Jumma villagers from rebuilding a school in Pilabhanga village under Patachara Union of Ramgarh Upazila in Khagrachari district. The soldiers have seized building tools from them.

According to sources, the villagers of West Pilabhanga were reconstructing a pre-primary school today when a group of army personnel led by Lt. Rabbi from Sindukchari zone went there and seized the building tools.

The school was first built in 2007. Another report said the villagers had fled when they saw the army coming.

Prabhat Chandra Chakma told ‘We saw the army coming. We were afraid of them, so we stopped work and ran away.’

‘Then the army took our tools away.’ he added.

An indigenous Chakma girl raped in Sajek


On 24 February 2013 a 13-year indigenous Chakma girl was reportedly raped by a Bengali settler at Nakshachari village under Sajek union of Baghaichari upazila in Rangamati district.

It is learnt that the incident happened on that day around 3:00 pm while the victim went out for a walk. Finding her alone, Md. Mamun, 21, son of Jalil, of Baghaihat bazaar, took her into a roadside jungle and committed rape on her.

The villagers recovered the girl from the jungle, but failed to nab Mamun as he escaped riding his motorbike. A rape case (no. 4, dated 24 February 2013) was filed with Baghaichari police station. Police arrested perpetrator Md. Mamun from his house. The victim was admitted at Rangamati district hospital for medical test. It is learnt that the medical test found positive.


An Indigenous Marma girl rescued in senseless condition from jungle in Rangamati

On 2 March 2013 an indigenous Marma girl was rescued with senseless condition from the jungle nearby Khipyapara-Asambastibast bridge under Rangamati municipality in Rangamati district. The victim was admitted at Rangamati district hospital with critical condition.

The victim informed that she was taken to a restaurant in Rauzan by three Bengali girl students. After having snacks, she along with three Bengali girls got up to an auto-rickshaw. After that, she became senseless. Later, she got sense and recovered herself at a jungle along with two Bengali youths including a government service holder. They tried to rape her, but she could narrowly escape. She tried to take shelter at the house of Bengali villagers, but they did not provide shelter. After few minutes, she became again senseless. Since then, she knows nothing.

The victim is from Kaukhali upazila under Rangamati district bordering to Rauzam upazila in Chittagong district.

A school teacher arrested on a charge of sexual harassment in Rangamati

School Management Committee (SMC) of Jibtoli Chaiman Para Government Primary School assured that recently a school teacher has been accused on a charge of sexual harassment of his own girl students in Jiptoli area of Rangamati Sadar upazila under Rangamati district.

The SMC members inform that, the students’ guardians, the local authority including some village respected brought a complaint against a culprit named Arup Kumar Mutsuddi, who has been harassing his girl students sexually minimum 5-7 students for seven to eight months. But the victims were silent for social security and safety issue. One day, a school girl discussed about her observation with her parent about the teacher’s objectionable activities with other girl students.

Following the allegation from the student guardians called for immediate meeting, and thereafter, found solid evidence when many of the students confirmed that they were sexually harassed by culprit Arup Kumar Mutsuddi. 

However, a case has been filed against the perpetrator with the technical help of BLAST with Rangamati police station under the law of Prevention of Oppression against Women and Children Act 2000. On 21 March 2013 police arrested the alleged perpetrator from a town of Rangamati. In the meantime, the school students and local people organized a human chain demanding immediate of suspension from his job in front of Deputy Commissioner Office in Rangamati. 

An 8-year indigenous Marma girl raped by Bengali settler student in Guimara

 On 26 March 2013, a Bengali settler boy (14) Md. Belal Hossain s/o Md. Nurul Islam of Kalapani village, allegedly raped an indigenous Marma girl (8), who is a school student of class III of Hapchari government primary school of the Hapchari mouza under Guimara police station in Ramgarh upazila of Khagrachari district. It is learnt that the girl went to attend a sport program at her school in the celebration of Independence Day of Bangladesh.  On her way, Md. Belal Hossain suddenly seized and raped her forcibly in quiet place. The survivor bled profusely as was admitted to Khagrachari Sadar hospital. A case was filed with the Guimara police station in connection with the incident. Police arrested the culprit.
