On 4th September, 2012, a 12-YEAR old Jumma girl has
been subjected to an attempted rape while on her way back home in Ramgarh under
Khagrachari district.
According to sources from chtnews.com, it has been learnt that the girl and her mother from
Kalapani village under Patachara Union No. 2 in Ramgarh Upazila went to Datmara
bazaar in Fatikchari in the morning on that day.
At around 1pm, the
victim was returning home on a hired motorbike, leaving her mother behind in
the bazaar.
When they reached a lonely place in Balukhali Nashia tea
estate, Md. Alamgir, 25, son of Chan Mia of Datmara, the driver of the motorbike,
halted, dragged her into a roadside jungle and then tried to rape her.
At that time, two people -- Khalek, a bamboo trader, and
Shahajahan, a local villager, -- were passing by the road.
Seeing them, the girl gave a loud shout to attract their
attention, which made the culprit, Alamgir, scared and run away.
The passersby then rescued her and escorted her back home.
Sexual violence against Jumma women is commonplace in the
Chittagong Hill Tracts, while the perpetrators are rarely prosecuted.
Since January this year, at least 8 cases of rape and 5
cases of attempted rape have been reported.
