Jumma organisations stage demo against land acquisition in Ruma

THREE Jumma organisations staged demonstrations in Panchari in protest
at a government plan to acquire 9,560 acres of land for the purpose of
expansion of Ruma cantonment in Bandarban.

The demonstration was organised by Hill Students Council (PCP), Hill
Women’s Federation and Democratic Youth Forum on 3 December.

At a rally held at Panchari bus station, the speakers urged the
government to cancel the acquisition plan and provide constitutional
recognition to the traditional land rights of the Jumma people.

They also called for the government to stop land grabbing and return
the lands already grabbed by illegal settlers to their rightful
owners.

The rally was addressed by Pronoy Chakma, president of PCP Panchari
unit, Hari Kamal Tripura, its general secretary, Nicolas Chakma,
president of DYF Panchari unit and Madri Chakma, general secretary of
DYF Khagrachari district unit.

The rally was preceded by a procession which started from Panchari
college ground and paraded Panchari bazaar.
