Survival International's Letter to the PM of Bangladesh demanding full investigation on recent Ramgarh arson attack.
-------------------------------------
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina
Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh
Prime Minister’s Office Tejgaon Dhaka Bangladesh
May 4, 2011 Dear Prime Minister,
Survival International is extremely concerned about the recent violence in Ramgarh in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.
In recent months there have been two major arson incidents in the CHT, both resulting in deaths, injuries and extensive damage to many Jumma homes. There have been reports, during both incidents, that the Bangladesh security forces stood back and allowed the settlers to attack the Jumma tribal peoples and their homes, and are therefore complicit in these attacks.
As you will be aware, the underlying cause of both these violent outbreaks was tension between the Bengali and Jumma communities over land. Until the land disputes in the CHT are resolved these clashes will undoubtedly continue.
Survival urges your government to order a full investigation into the recent violence in the Hill Tracts and especially into the role the security forces played. All those responsible should be brought to justice. We also urge you to prevent further land-grabbing, to return to the Jumma peoples the land that has been stolen from them, and to end the military occupation of the Chittagong Hill Tracts. The promises made to the Jumma peoples in the 1997 Peace Accord must be fulfilled so that the Jummas can live safely on their own land.
Yours sincerely,
Stephen Corry Director General
