CHT journalists face pressure from various quarters

Treasury bench lawmaker Jatindra Lal Tripura said that journalists working in the Chittagong Hill Tracts regularly face pressure from various quarters, political as well as administrative.

‘In the CHT, journalism is a tough job. I also had to face trouble when I worked for the Bangladesh Observer. I know that the situation has remained almost unchanged,’ said Jatindra who is the chairman of Chittagong Hill Tracts Task Force on Returnee Refugees and Internally Displaced People.

He was speaking at the inauguration of a workshop on ‘UN standards on the rights of indigenous people’, organised by the International Labour Organisation at Hotel Lakeshore. More than 30 journalists from the CHT attended the workshop that was concluded on Monday.

‘Though the prime minister is cordial enough and willing to improve the situation, some fundamentalists are trying to hinder the development process,’ said the lawmaker.
He called upon the journalist to be objective and fearless in reporting the truth.
